Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
|
NLP uses physiology and the unconscious mind to change thought processes and therefore
behavior. Areas that can be helped include coping with stress, stress, anger, anxiety,
improving performance, pain management; actually the list is endless.
The mechanics of NLP consist of language (linguistics) and behavior modification
(programming) via language influencing the mind (neuro).
The linguistic part is extremely important because language influences the neuro-
associations, which is our way of rationalizing; how our responses relate to our impulses.
Our nervous system (neuro), or our mind, is used to experience the world through our
five senses: auditory, visual, kinesthetic, gustatory, and olfactory.
Language is used to store our experience and give it meaning. We experience inside our
mind: sounds, pictures, feelings, tastes, and smells. We also experience internal dialog or
self-talk.
Through the discovery of the programs, patterns and strategies we run in our mind to
achieve our goals we gain the ability to alter our patterns and behaviors. NLP is how we
use the basic language of our mind to consistently achieve the results we want in life.
Often we are programmed and our behavior is habitual – for example, if someone treats us
badly we might get irritated or answer in an aggressive way – we all have these patterns
inside us.
The term ‘programming’ is not ideal because it gives the impression that we can use NLP to
program the brain, which is not the case.
In fact the use of the term ‘programming’ came about quite simply because Richard
Bandler, who together with John Grinder designed the NLP process in 1975, was fascinated
by technology and used the programming metaphor, likening the brain to a computer in
order to explain the mechanisms. If our behavior were a program, we would be able to
work on it and modify it, so this metaphor helps to explain how our brains work.
Others describe NLP as an instruction manual for the brain because it allows us to make
changes, to motivate ourselves and feel more secure and understand a little about how our
minds work.
Past problems can be explored and NLP techniques used to set you on a path towards
achieving your goals. NLP Therapy is about action, it's dynamic and energetic,
making the changes you want to change happen now.
Everyone has all the resources they need to make positive changes in their life, NLP
techniques are used as a tool to facilitate these changes, leaving you to concentrate on
what you are thinking, feeling and any other sensory observations.
New patterns of behavior are established and the NLP techniques learned can be used in
other situations. So YOU become your own expert.
NLP Therapy can also be content free. This means the therapist can be effective without
knowing about the problem in great detail. Clearly this is a major advantage of NLP over
traditional therapies as people seeking therapy may be embarrassed about the idea of
discussing personal issues one to one with a stranger. The very nature of NLP removes
this hindrance.
As well as being content free, experience shows that NLP Therapy also tends to be fast,
typically resolving issues in several brief sessions.
NLP techniques provide new ways of dealing with emotional problems such as low self
esteem, anxiety, lack of confidence, as well as destructive relationship patterns coping
with breakups.
Phobias such as spiders, heights, dogs, escalators, water, lifts/elevators, etc can be
overcome as there are many NLP phobia cures available depending on the subject and
your personal circumstances. The same phobia cures are successfully used on fears, such
as fear of failure, fear of public speaking, fear of examinations and fear of driving.
NLP can help improve performance, so making a good performance excellent and also
improving the consistency of performance. It feels good to do well, and it feels VERY
good to do well all the time. People perform at all levels, from the person who views golf or
tennis as a hobby to the professional athlete. We all enjoy that feeling of knowing our
game has improved, and for some high achievers that improvement is paramount to stay
ahead in their sport or field.
Achieving and maintaining good performance is essential at all levels including work and
personal relationships. Performance is often judged by others. Having the clarity to
notice this and listen to what others are telling you is an asset. NLP can help develop the
skills needed for relationships to stay on track.
NLP has been successfully used with weight reduction and many other healthy lifestyle
choices. There are clearly physical benefits from a one to one NLP session in coping with
stress. When we struggle with problems we feel the effects of stress, especially when the
problems are longstanding. Addressing the problem reduces the level of stress therefore
not only do we feel better emotionally, we feel physically better too.
